Heather Doctor -- Why He Feared Suicide

Sources say Heather Locklear was so upset Saturday, her doctor feared she might do herself in.
Locklear 911 audio -- click to listen
TMZ first reported that the doctor called 911 Saturday night, saying "I have a patient and I have a feeling she's suicidal." Sources say the doctor was afraid Heather might OD on depression medication. When paramedics arrived Heather was ok so they left within 10 minutes.

Heather's reps told us it was all a bunch of nothing, but clearly they did not bank on the 911 tape getting released. Yesterday, the Ventura County Fire Department released the tape with the "suicide" comment. We're told Heather's people were furious and contacted County lawyers, claiming the info was protected and threatening legal action.

The real question -- what had Heather so upset to alarm her doc? We did some digging and found nothing was going on between her and ex-hubby Richie Sambora. There have been rumblings there might be some tension between Heather and boyfriend Jack Wagner, but we can't confirm it.

31. Heather was furious at Long Beach, ca resident Josh Starer, because he called animal control on Heather Locklear saying her dog was'nt licensed. Typical Josh Starer needy for attention.

32. I believe the call was a hoax because any doctor worth his salt would have had her address in a computer patient file. In his line of work these situations wouldn't be unusual so access to a patients address whether on blackberry or computer would be routine.

33. The tabloids have said Heather's an alcoholic. It probably had something to do with Jack. He seems sleazy. He probably cheated on her.

34. It should be obvious he would have her address, unless he bills her to a PO box or she pays in cash. He's ovbiously been there before to know it's gated and what streets it's on.

35. He wants to be another Dr. Phil - what he did was unethical and he may have to face the board. You can't go making things like this public, plain and simple.

36. It's not her love life. Her boyfriend has been on good behavior for awhile now. His marriage didn't survive because of past baggage, but he's on good terms with his ex and he genuinely cares about Heather. He's taken her to AA meetings. Her daughter, family and boyfriend are the good things she has going on right now. It's her own personal demons she's battling, compounded by career and hormonal issues. She's never been the most secure person. She suffered through years of marriage to a sometimes violent guy with substance abuse problems, quickly followed by another marriage to a nice guy with lingering alcohol issues. In the past she could bury her sorrows in work, but her most recent series haven't panned out. Depression is most common for women in their 40's, and hormones usually play a part. I highly doubt she was ever suicidal. Her doctor wanted to make sure for his own peace of mind. He probably wouldn't have used 911 if he had known it would get this kind of attention.

42. If she has clinical depression, there doesn't have to be a "reason" for having an acute episode of depression. It often happens out of the blue, even if you're feeling fine with your life. It's a biochemical imbalance, it's not the same as the normal depression everybody feels for a while after an unhappy event.

Clinical depression is basically a disorder of the natural feedback mechanism that brings us down from euphoria and brings us up from depression, both of which are stressful events for the body. Stress (happy and unhappy) is normal, if we didn't have such a mechanism than we would all be on a life-draining roller coaster all the time. Sometimes such depression can seem to be initially triggered by an especially stressful event, but actually the disorder was already present for a long time and an acute episode could be set off spontaneously as well. Recurrences especially tend to have nothing to do with life events. It's not anybody's "fault", nobody "caused" it no matter how obnoxious they were to the person. The medication tries to normalize the feedback mechanism so the person feels all the regular emotions but doesn't escalate downward or upward. However, they also usually get antidepressants for an acute episode especially, just to get them through it. Adjusting medication properly can take a long time and the proper dosage and the proper medication can change over the years. It all depends on the individual, some people have a lot of trouble with the meds while others do fine very soon.

Suicide is actually more likely when the person is feeling better after an acute episode - during the episode, they just don't have the energy for it. When you hear of someone committing suicide with no apparent reason, that's probably what happened - they were undiagnosed or else any treatment just wasn't working well enough. The disorder really takes all the joy out of life during an episode, so they decide they can't live with it anymore. A family member with the disorder who was off medication for years (doctor's advice, some people don't need it continuously) suddenly found himself in the midst of an acute episode, and he sounded like a zombie until the medication kicked in again. He never expected it, because his life had been going really well.

There are also medications (including antidepressants) that heighten the risk of suicidal thoughts. Interesting from the standpoint of brain chemistry - but deadly. Recreational drugs, which obviously affect the brain, are risky also - it really isn't safe to mix them (including alcohol) with the medications for depression or even just with the disorder itself. There can be interactions that can mess around with the brain more than would happen with someone without the disorder or not taking certain medications.

44. Enough already! You keep wrtiting the same thing day after day. Your making all of us suicidal about now ! She should sue 911 . Nobody is allowed to have a real crappy day anymore in private.

45. Poor Heather.. she needs the publicity. BTW, the psych doc should've gone to check on her if he thought she was at risk.
Now Heather can do the talk show circuit to exlain what a 'misunderstanding" it all was...

PS. Love you AMY SEDARIS
