Lewis Takes Foot Out of Mouth, Issues Statement

Alleged comedian Jerry Lewis has issued a statement to CNN, following the public outcry over his use of a gay slur on this weekend's MDA Telethon:

"During the 21-1/2-hour live broadcast of my Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this weekend, I made a joking comment to a member of my production team. I apologize to anyone who was offended. I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the Telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well. That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the Telethon pains me deeply. The success of the show and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

91. If you weren't ashamed of the things you do, you wouldn't be offended by an old man's comment.

92. Hey,,I'm gay.. and I think that what Jerry said was pretty funny! LOL

93. FAULT LIES ON BOTH SIDES You have some militant gays who is trying to get back at
everybody who mistreated them and the Rev. Fred Phelps crowd, they are the mouthpieces for the media.

I don't think Jerry made the comment in purpose and he was not forced to apologized
and no one told him to, but he did and should be forgiven.

At this juncture the people making the most fuss is the anti-gay crowd.

96. I cannot believe some of the stupid comments I have read concering Jerry Lewis. Those idiots that want to boycott MDA and the telethon are only going to hurt the people with muscle diseases who the telethon is trying to help.Real intelligent on your part people. I cant see why such a fuss is being made over what he said. Why should we all have to walk on eggshells because we might offend a gay person. My thought concering gay people has always been you live your life and Ill live mine. Stop being so sensitive and looking to always make trouble. And then you want respect. Jerry Lewis has given most of his life and time to this cause like no one else would ever do and he should stay exactly where he is no matter how old he is. He is a good person who is doing more for people than all these ignorant people who are making a fuss over this. Let the Man alone. We still have free speech in this country and He said he was sorry. Let it go at that. His good far outways any bad. I wonder just how many evil and cruel things some of these people who are putting him down has done themselves. Therefore dont point a finger at someone whose shoes you can never shine. Do something good for the world beside fighting people over gay comments. As others here have said "GET A LIFE".

98. "Alleged comedian", gee now there's an unbiased fair reporting of "fact". Are you trying to be the left wing version of Fox News or something? The man IS a comedian, and whether you personally think he's funny or not is irrelevant, many others do. Should the people who consider TMZ the internet equivalent of the National Enquirer start calling it an "alleged news website"?

He slurred the offending word on purpose, and he obviously wasnt seriously insinuating that the crewmember was "gay" or directing it meanly towards gay people. The biased remark directed towards Lewis at the beginning of this article is an indication that certain thin-skinned TMZ "staff members" took the word to heart personally, for whatever reason ("not that there's anything wrong with that"), and just had to get their cheap "dig" in at the man. He apologized and he meant it, so get over yourselves, people. The world doesnt revolve around you and your sexual preference.

99. Many comedian have used that term for years, I'm not saying that it makes this ok, but what is acceptable in our society today?

Jerry has been a great comedian and his movies from those with Dean Martin to great films like the Bell Boy have stood the test of time. Do not measure the man based on this inccident. Jerry has had a suddle sarcastic sense of humor, while in poor choice for a fundraiser, this should not overshadow the good work he has done. Let it go people!

For those that were offended, I truely hope you can forgive this inncident, at the same time take a look at those in the entertainment industry say to yourself are you being hypocritical of this one person. Again just let it go.

100. Everyone has prejudices against one thing or another. I am hispanic and have been called an illegal (which I am not because I am Puerto Rican) and a Spic. While comments like that do bother me, I just consider the source and move on.
Jerry Lewis is an elderly man who quickly apologized for comments made. Just leave him alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

102. I am gay. I am in no way offended by Jerry's remark. Even if I were, I'd surely want to know the context from which this dialogue was taken. However, I am not and with all the good he's done, this is better left an ant hill, and it's a sad day when it's even that. Also, with most of his existance in the Hollywood community he has got to be profoundly aware of this subject and must have, and have had, many gay friends...It's just a word, and perhaps it was used in a comedic sense. Get over it! We use it in our own circles.

103. 97. "Gotta agree with #2 and #3. It's a preference...a choice. I'm tired of all the B.S. that we have to tolerate them."

It is 2007 and we are still using the word "preference". Tell me on which exact date did you decide to prefer to screw the opposite sex. The word is orientation. You must have gone to the Jerry Falwell School of Cause & Effect. There is orientation and then there is behavior. Both sides of this stupid arguement need to learn the difference.
