Lewis Takes Foot Out of Mouth, Issues Statement

Alleged comedian Jerry Lewis has issued a statement to CNN, following the public outcry over his use of a gay slur on this weekend's MDA Telethon:

"During the 21-1/2-hour live broadcast of my Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this weekend, I made a joking comment to a member of my production team. I apologize to anyone who was offended. I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the Telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well. That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the Telethon pains me deeply. The success of the show and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."

47. Is there anything that can be said that doesn't offend someone?

Jerry Lewis has done a lot of charitable work.

Give him a frigging break.

48. I live in Tucson, the home of MDA and I'm gay. While I have heard excuses that he was tired when he stated this homophobic remark the fact of the matter is that when one is tired they say what they think. I've worked for MDA in the past and volunteered for them even further back and I will never do so again. It's time for Jerry to be removed as spokesperson now and I call on each and every gay person and GLBT organization to boycott MDA and the Jerry Lewis Telethon financially until this homophobic old has been is removed as spokesperson.

49. I gave up on Jerry a number of years back when I watched a show taken backstage during the MD telethon. He was so rude and nasty to the backstage workers.

51. The guy is in his 80's and was probably loopy after so many hours on live television. He likely didn't even realize the implication of what he said until after he said it. That doesn't excuse his comment---but it also doesn't prove he is a homophobe. At least he took responsibility for his words which is more than many celebrities do. He also didn't wait forever to do it.

52. How many millions has been collected over the years? So where is the frickin money going? Where is the cure, already?

53. Tyler Roberts...God gave you AIDS as punishment for your perversions, not Jerry Lewis.

54. First and last time I bother with this crapbox site. Lewis has done more for humans than this wormstorer of a website. Calling Jerry lewis "alleged comedian" is just stupid and ignorant. He's in his mid 70's and was up some 30 hrs, yeah that's right over 30 hours...you don't just show up 5 minutes before showtime....look your site sucks and you make you way on crap and anyone who devotes time to this site is an under educated fool with little or no self esteem.
YOUR SITE BLOWS. God Bless Jerry Lewis, and he really is sorry about what he said.

55. Wake up! P.C. will be the downfall of all thats right in the world. It's wrong to live in fear of what people will think about your words. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If your making a joke why apologize for it? Have some cajones and take responsibility for your own words and actions.

56. You people are a bunch of mindless morons. Get a life.

57. I am sure many of Jerry's contributors to the MDA are gay. He has no problem accepting their money. He definitely needs to address his homophobia and apologize to everyone he has offended. He is a public figure and must set a higher standard.

58. This is absolutely disgusting. The same lynch mob that rallied around until Isiah Washington lost his job, and still won't allow the nation to forget about it, is on this site proclaiming freedom of speech, and acting as apologists for this man. He has done a lot of good for kids in horrible situations, but who is to say that other parties haven't done the same on a less public stage. Inherently, the problem was with the hatred associated with the word, and not what an individual has done to overshadow it, so please, justify why all the sudden it is being said to forget about it in this instance? That is, however, a rhetorical question, because I would say whether you want to admit it or not, we all know the answer to that.

59. actually, my comment was meant for the guy who signed himself as Straight Guy #53...sorry #54, and just so you know #53 God made us gay...if he did not want us to be gay we would not be...and be grateful there is a natural form of birth control out there and that gays are not breeders

60. MOST of the people commenting here are getting it right, I believe - this is blown way out of proportion. And TMZ, you show extreme ignorance and unwarranted bias by calling Lewis an "alleged" comedian - do some research if you have to, he's a legendary performer and trailblazing comedian in many ways...he's a senior citizen now, and he made an off-color remark to someone on his staff, apparently as an inside joke or something. Think about if any one of us were as scrutinized for our daily casual language....also, most of my gay friends don't mind gay jokes, they think they're funny because they realize that no group of words has the power to define them...the man has explained, and apologized. He obviously has a very big heart and the will to do some good about some of the problems of the world, so I think he should be forgiven for a slip of the tongue! Leave Jerry Lewis alone, grow up and get over it.
