Oprah: My School is Safe, Not Strict

Oprah WinfreyOprah Winfrey is denying allegations that her new school in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls, is too strict with its students.

A statement from The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation says, "Our goal is to protect the health, welfare and well-being of the students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. As with other boarding schools, we provide a structured, safe and nurturing environment in which the girls can learn and develop."

News24 in South Africa reported yesterday that cell phones and email are not allowed during the week, parental visits need to be approved by the school at least two weeks in advance, and the maximum number of visitors per pupil is four.

Parents are not allowed to bring junk food items for their children, News24 said, but the Foundation told us that food items are discouraged but not prohibited. The Foundation went on to say that the students are allowed to have treats and that family members are encouraged to bring books, journals or educational materials to their girls when they visit.

News24 also reported that a satellite meeting between Oprah and the parents was abruptly canceled last week. The Foundation says no teleconference or in-person meeting with the parents and guardians was scheduled for last week.

What utter crap are you talking? have you ever even been to south africa? obviously not or you would know that our culture and people are NOTHING like denmark, in fact we are probably the complete opposite!

the school is not seen as a prison!!!! those girls come from clay huts and sleep of clay floors under straw roofs, if they are lucky enough to even have a roof over their heads. everyone needs rules and guidelines to live by or the world would fall apart. what do you think the government is? to say a school with strict rules is a prison is like saying a country with laws is a prison. i mean really? how stupid can you be?

the rest of you negative, racist, repulsive idiots:

109. I am disgusted by all the racist comments left on this site regarding Oprah, her deeds are good, she has helped the people devasted by Katrina in New Orleans, (she has worked faster than your own President Bush has in helping to house the homeless) and she also supports many charities that she doesnt tell everyone about. I am Canadian and feel so blessed right now to be born in this GREAT COUNTRY, sure we have our problems but I know one thing for sure ...Americans in general are extremely racist, and you people think of yourselves as the greatest country in the world?? God help you !!!

I hope Barrack Obama gets voted in as president or hey maybe Oprah will run for it and kick everyones asses!!!
She would definitly turn your country into a better place!!

110. To number 111 and 112:

I think that it is a good idea that she is etablishing schools in South Africa. No question about that. They need it.

But allow them to have visit from their family once a week. How should a family visit destroy the schooling provided by her school? I am not talking about the students to leave and come without control.

A school becomes a prison, when the child can not see its family in a degree, that the child needs. I agree that some children properly can not attend a boarding school due to that need.

That is why boarding schools are not very used in Denmark. They would often hurt the connection between the children and his or her parents and destroy family relations. Some years back our government cut back on support of the continuation schools, which were schools for children, who did not do well in our ordinary schools due to the fact, that they were hurtful. Instead we have a widespread use of family classes, where our government compensate the employer of one of the parents, so that parent can be at the local school and support the child in the class. We are talking about drastric positive results and a significant reduction of the number of the so-called "at-risk" teens.

Basic guidelines is OK. Cell phones, IPOD etc. are not something that belongs in a classroom. At the school those things are something I have to collect in the pricipals office if they have been switched on during classes. (My children dont even own such things, but other children have them.). But basic guidelines should not contain include restriction of the communication between the child and he or her parents.

111. The teens here in california are just plain lazy. They go from part time jobs to part time job. They don't WANT an education. The school system is so bad here. It seems to me that it is the parents fault for not teaching their children respect, honor, morals, self worth etc. I see so many kids just hanging out. What happened to staying with one job and giving 100%??? That is what we did when I was growing up. We all had manners, respect for our elders, a pride in our selves and always gave 100% at our jobs. Now days if you don't like your boss, you quit!!!! What is up with that??? This world is going to hell in a hand basket.

114. Oprah is doing a commendable job,to help the less fortunate children in South Africa, and
in Africa in general.I think unless you travel to Africa,Asia and South America, and see
the poverty level in those countries, you won't understand how children survive in city slams
and in rural areas. It is by Grace of God people survive, and life is hard and tough.
Oprah keep the good job you're doing and God Bless you.Thank you
SK.me I come from Africa and I know those problems.

116. I trust that Oprah is doing what is right and appropriate for the children of the South African culture who are victims of a terrible social and political upheaval.
I'm concerned over how ill-informed all of you Oprah critics are!!
This woman has proven herself to be a great vanguard of social justice over the decades and suddenly you think she has sinister motives???
I believe that some of us are very threatened when we are confronted with such innate goodness and kindness as Oprah Winfrey ... such a bright light is blinding to those of us who live in a bleak darkness... the only way to deal with it is to try and put the light out.
The problem is not IN or With Oprah .... its IN those that criticise her.

As for Oprah "giving to South African children and denying American children" ...
These statements can only be coming from people (Americans obviously) who have an outrageous sense of entitlement. How much more do you think Oprah should give to American children. Her generosity toward Americans generally, albeit children has been extraordinary. Unfortunately, for some, this will never be enough.

I suggest those of you that are denigrating Oprah in these blogs spend some time watching her shows.... YOU MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING !!

Godspeed Oprah Winfrey

117. South Africa is facing a crisis in education right now. If an angel of God has brought blessings by building such an expensive school, why should there be laxity ther? Every institution has rules and regulations they are to be obeyed and to keep a standard. How many children attend school under trees in SOuth Africa in this 21st century. Oprah the Lord does not like compromisers stand your ground if it is too much for them let them go back to the locations they came from. Sorry. Boshie - Pretoria

120. Oprah is doing a wonderful thing by having created this academy for these girls. The individuals that have expressed negative criticism must be mis-guided.

Having guidelines creates boundries which is something all children need and something that kids in our country are missing in their schools and homes. I often wonder how the next generation will inter-act at work and business.

I hope more wealthy people put their money to good use to benefit those less fortunate.
