Brandy Unfairly Targeted, Civil Rights Group Claims

BrandyBlack civil rights leaders in Los Angeles claim the California Highway Patrol has made singer/actress Brandy "a political trophy."

The Los Angeles City Attorney is deciding whether to file misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges against Brandy, whose Land Rover slammed into a Toyota on the 405 Freeway killing the driver.

Today, Najee Ali, leader of Project Islamic HOPE, said the CHP's recommendation to file charges against the singer "is unfairly targeting her for prosecution because of her celebrity." Ali told TMZ he is organizing an e-mail campaign in the African American community to put pressure on City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo to reject the case.

Delgadillo says "We will treat this case like every other case and treat it very seriously because someone died."

241. I can't believe this story has 16 pages of comments. She admitted she started the accident. She is at fault. The CHP forwarded the case to the DA's office who will make the decision whether or not to pursue the case. Its not a matter of her being targeted because of her celebrity, it the law sysytem at work. For that say why is being charged when she didnt kill the lady, the answer is simple. She started the accident which ended up with the lady dieing as a result. That is why she is being charged.

The amount of hatred flying back and forth here is a joke. Unfortunately the race card gets played way too much. There have been a few totally ingorant posts here by a few people. When are you going to get it that its not about race its about a law that was borken or a crime that was committed. Yes racism does exist in america still. But it is not always directed towards african americans. Ive seen cases of racism by african americans towards other races and it is never called racism. Racism goes both ways which is a shame.

242. Celebrities get the idol treatment that us mere mortal types can only dream about. Race is not an issue here. Wealth is.

Sure, the race card is played and we get divided over it. Why? Is it still a sensitive subject for many of us? Yes it is. Could it be that her advisors want the public to raise voices in a racial injustice outcry to pressure the city attorney? Good strategy for her... Bad for us. Most of them would not even invite us over for dinner, yet they want our protest voices to play to their benefit. We do know that injustices still exist in our society. But lets call this one for what it is and not get divided over a bogus cry.

In the end, we are treated unfairly... We are being played and divided by the media and her handlers. Shame on them for taking a serious wound and pulling off the scab just to divide us.

It mitigates real cries of injustice when people choose to use the race card to avoid consequences normally faced. It is unfair that she would be treated special. Above the law even. It is unfair that she would have vocal support of a civil rights group, when most injustices go without public notice and debate.

In the end, we all are worse off!

245. When the media first announced the story, it was reported that Brandy accepted blame for the accident and felt terrible, and contacted the victim's family with her sincere apology and sympathy. She was an exemplary citizen for admitting her responsibility in the crash, albeit not a very good role model behind the wheel for speeding. Someone did die, yes, and she died as a result of her car being rear-ended by Brandy's SUV causing it to careen into a divider, to be stricken head on or from the side by another car that then crashed into hers, which is what killed her. Brandy was negligent in her driving, but her SUV's impact didn't directly kill the victim, and she immediately and openly accepted responsibility for the accident as though she had. She wasn't trying to evade anything, and her behavior after the consequences is what should be making the major impression, not the fact that this tragic death occurred. I honestly don't think that Brandy would repeat the speeding or other irresponsible driving behavior; I think she's learned her lesson from this tragedy, and I was a bit taken aback to read that the CHP intended to charge her with vehicular manslaughter. Wouldn't her involvement in community service and starting up or joining the campaign for safe driving serve a better purpose? If she is punished for stepping forward freely to accept the blame and apologizing, won't her audience, and similar peers, take this as a message that the best thing they should do in the same circumstances, is to drive off, or deny it? Before I began to see all the hystrionic, racist rants over this, my thought about the inequities involved were that vehicular manslaughter was only a misdemeanor, with a sentence of up to 1 year in jail. Here is the travesty, no? Brandy is suffering enough--she's not an unconscienable criminal. She is being sued for $50 million (which I doubt she has) because of her celebrity status, and can't that be punishment enough? She will probably wind up paying damages, and I don't think she'll mind. The death of the 38-year-old mother is a heavy weight on Brandy's conscience. She is a very decent person; a rarity among most of the celebrated hip-hop or Hollywood icons around her age.

246. Hold up on the black people get over yourself comments. I am black and if she did what I have read. She needs to go directly to jail. Do no pass go.

We all know if that was one of us black or white we would be in jail. She killed someone.

Black folks need stop playing that damn race card. Everything is not about the color of our skin. Everytime some black gets in trouble some group wants to come and defend them. Enough is a enough.

That's my two cents from a black female

247. I agree that it was an accident... that is why she is not being charged with a felony. The horrific accident caused an inocent person to lose her life. The casue of the accident is due to Brandys' lasck of attention to the road while driving. This isn't an "oops, my bad, I'm sorry" situation!

What ever happened to the idea of taking responsibilty for you actions. It doesn't matter who it is! This is what happened now take responsibilty and I think that Brandy is the type of person that will indeed do that.

On another note - civil rights leaders have made the term "racism" meaningless. The majority of the population has been numbed by the ignorant stances these "leaders" have decided to take. All they are is self loving attention getters that have put a roadblock in equality.

Yo "Civil rights leaders" take some responsibility for you ignorant actions and shut up!!!

248. A life was lost due to an uninterrupted chain of events caused by another person. That tells me that the person causing the accident should be responsible for their actions and the results of their actions. This is just common sense and act of doing what is right and moral. Alot of people want to be an exception instead of an example. They want to use their "Social Standing" to make things easy for or on them. Stand up and accept your responsibilities no matter what your race may be. Life is nothing but choices and you get to live with the result of the ones you make and some that are made for you. Do the right thing, Learn from it and get over it. It's not about race, It's about what is RIGHT.

252. This may have been an "accident", but the law suit has nothing to do with race. It has to do with money. If Brandy were a rich white girl she'd still be getting sued.

253. to mourassa- comment#256. no darling, it wasn,t whitey who created the race card,it was your ancestors in africa who created slaverythey SOLD their own people to american plantation owners for money and goods. black african tribes to this very day enslave other black tribes but why do we never hear about that from the oprah,s and liberal medias of the world.blacks and muslims were the first to create slavery a long time before blacks were brought to america! the muslim group known as the moors invaded europe which was occupied by white people,in italy, spain, ect; the moors slaughtered, pillaged, and raped the woman of europe.so get your facts straight it was muslims and blacks who first created slavery.
