Richards -- "I'm Really Busted Up"

Michael Richards publicly apologized for his racist tirade in an appearance on "The Late Show," but acknowledged that such sentiment had the potential to "come[s] through and fire[s] out of me." He tried to find an awkward parallel between his ugly rant and conflict that has arisen between blacks and whites since Hurricane Katrina.

Looking sallow, drawn, and speaking in halting fragments, Richards explained via satellite from Los Angeles to David Letterman and friend Jerry Seinfeld in New York, that he had lost his temper after some members of the audience interrupted his act and that he "took it badly," unleashing the racist invective that TMZ first aired this morning. He apologized to the people who took "the brunt" of his abuse, saying he was "really busted up," but then went on a strange tangent on race relations, saying he was "concerned about hate and rage" and about a "great deal of disturbance between blacks and whites" after Hurricane Katrina.

Richards did not say whether any other factors contributed to his actions, adding only that he would be doing "personal work" in the aftermath of the incident.

Audience members in the Ed Sullivan Theater, who were watching Richards on a screen, began laughing at Richards at first, thinking that the interview was a comedy skit, until Seinfeld admonished them, saying, "Stop laughing. It's not funny."

76. Keshawn and black and proud are the same person: a stupid negroid fu&k who proves racism is justified. Richards is my hero. Too bad it's NOT 50 years ago

78. #41. Please boo. I'm not a young kid and am very educated about my history. My point, which you clearly didn't get, was that if you don't like someone, then don't try to cover it up and act like you do like a group of people. If you don't like me because I'm black, then fine. I'm over it and have been over it. I respect people who don't put on fronts. That's my point. So get off your high horse and don't try to act like your schooling me.

80. We own your white nasty asses. That's why he had to apologize. And that's why you couldn't say that to a Black Man's face. Coward! He was right in one of his statements. 50 yrs. ago, it probably would have gone down the way he described. But not today. Of course you know that. That's why you hide behind your screens, Blackberries, and a host of other electronic devises to keep from facing the truth: The nasty low-life maggot pale skinned creatures you are. Ask yourself a question: Would you really consider saying anything like that to a Black Man's face. Fuck no!

81. Clearly, Michael Richards' repulsive racist tirade only illustrates pain and torment in his heart. Hopefully, God will see fit to free him from the burden he carries. He will pay dearly for this . . . he may have ended his career (which presumably wasn't doing very well to begin with).

Thank goodness that the majority of people in this country (and around the world) have condemned Richards' unacceptable behavior in responding to hecklers in the audience. By the way, if you've ever been to a comedy club, you know that it is not uncommon to heckle comedians that "bomb" on stage. This is especially true in Hollywood, NYC, Chicago and Philly.

What I find disheartening is the large number of people that approve, or even go as far to justify Richards' attack on folks in his audience based upon their race. I truly feel sorry for those who must carry around the constant anger and pain associated with the hatred of an entire race of people without truly knowing them. Actually, tonight I'll pray that all of those who approve of Michael Richards' comedy club tirade are freed from the slavery of animosity, mistrust and mean-spiritedness. As a Christian and a Black American, it is the least I can do.

83. The comments were made, he said what he said, he meant what he said, ok lets move on. Who cares what he said? The word is used by our race all the time, and the moment that a white person uses the word, we want to throw our hands up and act shocked. Yes, he was wrong, and yes he meant everything except his appology; but why do we call each other the "N" word and act like it's not ok when it's said by the other race. Let this situation cause you to take a good look at yourselves and say to yourself "I will never use that word again". Only then can we as black people become offeneded by the use of the word.

88. everyone is bitching about michael richards for saying what everyone else is afraid to say...i don't care if you are white, black, red, yellow, or plaid with polka dots...those guys were being disrespectful to the man while he was doing his job...so, he disrespected them...if respect is not given it has to be earned...they gave no respect therefore they deserve no respect...the thing no one wants to look at is the why of it all...if those idiots had acted like civilized human beings in the first place none of this would have happened...they were true to their nature and they got a big dose of it back...and i bet you a million dollars those guys were calling each other nigger before the night was out....my point is not racism oriented...my point is everyone hides behind the politically correct banner nowadays...you can't solve problems with hiding the truth...the truth must come into the open to be addressed...so, if we all said what we really think about each other as people and races we would see where society really stands...i bet you all sides really do not like each other as much as the media would have us believe...therefore the problem lay deeper...i'm not defending richards as much as i am defending his right to get angry with belligerent idiots...we all have the 1st amendment to the constitution of the united states to defend our right to say anything we want to say...now the pc police are on anyone who doesn't play their game of censorship...that's what this is truly about in the long run...if i do not like you...i have a right to say that to you...and if you don't like what i have to say...their is a simple solution...do not listen to me....it's that easy people...in this mean old world their are bigger problems than this to address...if you are so thinskinned as to let words hurt you...you better grow up...the world is a rough place and sugar coating everything is not the way to find the source of problems...if someone doesn't like me, i want to know it and why they feel that way...that way i can fix their perception of me...put the truth in the open and fix the problem...yes, it could be that easy

90. I am deeply saddened by this incident with Mr. Michael Richards. I have enjoyed the Jerry Seinfield Show for many years with my daughter and my family. Although this somewhat ruins the show for me, I will forgive Mr. Richards and not be bound by his anger and apparent hate for blacks. I am so sick of the ignorance of bigotry and racism. Sad to say, Mr Michael Richards is right, perhaps 50 years ago, they would have hung that black man for just suggesting that his material was not funny. Yes, perhaps they would have killed him too as they did many of my ancestors. What's sad is that Mr. Richards really doesn't understand the gravity of his statement and as a result, cannot appreciate the debth of his own ignorance. I will forgive Mr. Richards because I feel very sorry for him, his family, and all those who support him. You are right Mr. Richards terrible things were done to me, my family and ancestors through out the years right here in my homeland. However, if you had gone back just 1 more decade and changed the venue to Nazi Germany, what would have happened to you?

I am truly saddend by this, but I think I will be okay after I get to see the next episode of Jerry Senfield.

Mr. Richards, you are in my prayers.
