Richards -- "I'm Really Busted Up"

Michael Richards publicly apologized for his racist tirade in an appearance on "The Late Show," but acknowledged that such sentiment had the potential to "come[s] through and fire[s] out of me." He tried to find an awkward parallel between his ugly rant and conflict that has arisen between blacks and whites since Hurricane Katrina.

Looking sallow, drawn, and speaking in halting fragments, Richards explained via satellite from Los Angeles to David Letterman and friend Jerry Seinfeld in New York, that he had lost his temper after some members of the audience interrupted his act and that he "took it badly," unleashing the racist invective that TMZ first aired this morning. He apologized to the people who took "the brunt" of his abuse, saying he was "really busted up," but then went on a strange tangent on race relations, saying he was "concerned about hate and rage" and about a "great deal of disturbance between blacks and whites" after Hurricane Katrina.

Richards did not say whether any other factors contributed to his actions, adding only that he would be doing "personal work" in the aftermath of the incident.

Audience members in the Ed Sullivan Theater, who were watching Richards on a screen, began laughing at Richards at first, thinking that the interview was a comedy skit, until Seinfeld admonished them, saying, "Stop laughing. It's not funny."

46. NEXT!!! If Michael called it like he saw it why oh why did he change it? If that's the way most white people feel stand up and say it. Place a picture next to your courageous and honest words. Be counted. Don't limit yourself to just a simple blog. Start a movement. Make it happen. Since so many white people feel just like you, it shouldn't be hard to recruit. Why not make this world a safer place? Remember change can begin with only one. Are you ready for the revolution? Because you talk like you are. Or is your bravery limited to your computer? Post your address and phone number don't be afraid to be the one to get it started.

I DIDN"T THINK YOU WOULD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AT LEAST TRY AND MAKE SENSE. YOU KNOW THE FEELINGS OF MOST WHITE PEOPLE. HOW SPECIAL YOU MUST BE THAT SO MANY CHOOSE YOU TO CONFIDE IN. THEY MUST HAVE SUSPECTED YOUR LEADERSHIP CAPABILITES A LONG TIME AGO. I FOR ONE CAN NOT WAIT.

47. All of you people who are throwing racial slurs and offenses against one another are no different than Richards. Celebrity aside, you people in your hearts are living out the same hate that you seem to be upset with. Do you understand what hypocrasy is? I suggest everyone look to God and ask him for forgiveness for yourselves and Richards and as long as you are praying, ask him to heal you so that you may find peace.

49. I cannot believe how ignorant people have become on this subject, and using the "Chappelle makes fun of white people" defense.

Well, first of all, Dave Chappelle and other black comedians, make fun of ALL races, genders, orientations, etc. I have heard many a black comedian make fun of whites, then turn around and make fun of blacks in the same sentence.

It's all in the name of humor, and often done to poke fun of stereotypes.

But what Michael Richards did was not a joke. This man hurled racist slurs at those people out of anger, plain and simple.

There is no excuse for his actions, so please, give the "black comedians make fun of white people" argument a rest.

51. Why is everyone so quick to forgive this man and not Mel Gibson? The things Michael Richards said were way more shocking, and he wasn't even drunk!

59. Everyone has a right to say what they want. I want to say Michael is a wonderful person. If he says he is sorry just to please all of you so be it. I don't think he is, and I think that is just fine.

60. A HATER!!! WHEW, I think I have been insulted, and by something called nasty boil. (which you must be on society). It such a shame that if you simply ask someone to proudly stand by the words that they speak, it is you who would then become the hater. Did I spew words of hate? What exactly is a hater? do you even know or did you just get that off some wanna be hip hop program? It truly amuses me that some people are so afraid of the opinions of others, that they can only resort to name calling. Well consider me CHECKED!!!!!

NOT!!!!!!!!
